On the first of July 2007, a nationwide ban on smoking in public places will be introduced in
England
.
Facts about the Smoking Ban
In 2005, 48% of pub and bar visitors smoked. This compares with approximately 23% of the total adult population, who choose to smoke.
The statistics show that in
Ireland
, where the smoking ban has been in force for almost 3 years, that smokers do not give up, they adapt to the circumstances. They also show that when it comes to drinking, smokers will visit the bars which accommodate them best.
The three main choices you have are: you can detract smokers by not providing any accommodating facilities, you can accept smokers by providing minimal facilities, or, you can attract smokers by providing warm and attractive facilities where the smokers can smoke in comfort.
Basic Outline
Here is our basic outline on the smoking ban legislation.
Smoking will be allowed in any ‘Insubstantially enclosed space’. What this means is, the areas where smoking will be permitted can have a roof, but 50% of the total wall space (permanent or temporary) must be permanently open. Any fitting which can be open or shut (i.e. doors or windows) cannot be counted in the 50%.
